In recent weeks there has been a particularly severe ground swell of anti-Japanese sentiment in China and South Korea in reaction to Japanese textbook issues, suggestions that Japan be allowed to join the United Nations Security Council, long-standing territorial disputes, and a perceived move to the right in Japanese politics. In addition to the normal reactions from the Chinese and South Korean governments, there have been large demonstrations in China during which the Japanese Embassy was attacked. Moreover, a poll at the end of March by the Asahi Shimbun, Dong-a Ilbo, and Chinese Academy of Sciences found that more than 60% of respondents in South Korea and China said they disliked Japan, an increase from earlier surveys. Despite improved relations on the economic and social fronts, the historical enmity between these countries continues to rear its ugly head. What can be done to resolve these issues? Are the Japanese alone to be blamed? How will these problems impact relations on both the economic and social fronts? What does this mean for U.S. relations in the region? How does President Koizumi’s recent apology impact the situation? Please join us to discuss these and other issues.
